about

I was born in Oxford but now live and work in Folkestone, Kent. Paul Kincaid and I have been partners for twenty-six years, married for twenty,  and we inevitably have a house full of books.

I work as a copy-editor, proofreader, freelance writer and script doctor. If I have a speciality, it would be science fiction and fantasy, but I’ve dealt with most flavours of fiction and a wide range of non-fiction over the years. Lately, I have been spending a lot of time working on academic articles and theses. Do enquire if you're interested in using my services. See 'contact me' for email details.

I am also working on a Ph.D focusing on North American indigenous literatures and critical theory at the University of Kent, Canterbury campus, where I completed a part-time BA in English Literature (2008) and a part-time MA in Postcolonial Studies (2010).

I’ve been writing reviews of and articles about sf and fantasy for most of my adult life, and have contributed to Paperback Inferno (now defunct) and Vector (still going!), both published by the British Science Fiction Association, as well as editing their news magazine Matrix for several years, and indeed running the organisation for a while. I have contributed reviews to Foundation, Interzone, Science-Fiction Studies and various other journals. I also review for Strange Horizons and The Zone.

I also have a book review column – The Mere Touch – at  Weird Fiction Review.

In 2011, the British Science Fiction Association published a chapbook containing some of my criticism and reviews, entitled And Another Thing … A Collection of Reviews and Criticism by Maureen Kincaid Speller, edited by Jonathan McCalmont. If you are interested in obtaining a copy, please contact Martin McGrath (martin at martinmcgrath.net).

I make occasional forays to London for literary events but you are more likely to meet me online here or on Twitter, where I am maureenkspeller. I like bookish conversation.

In my other spare time, I grow food in my garden and on my allotment, and then cook it. I knit socks and dabble in quilting and cross-stitch. Sometimes I write about all of this at The Fragrant Zodiack.

Mostly, though, I read. Because, really, without reading, what is the point of life?
